Robert
Wilson: "Prometheus"
Music: Iannis
Xenakis
An opera
by Robert Wilson
This production is one of the events planned and
supported by the
Cultural Olympiad 2001-2004
"Prometheus"
is an opera in three parts designed and staged by Robert Wilson with music by
Iannis Xenakis. The protagonist appears at first as a mysterious shadow within
the war in heaven, then as the Aeschylian hero and at last as the beneficiary
of Hercules' generosity.
The opera
is instructed in three Acts and five Kneeplays performed before and after each
act.
The New
York Times described Robert Wilson as "a towering figure in the world of
experimental theater and an explorer in the uses of time and space onstage.
Transcending theatrical convention, he draws in other performance and graphic
arts, which coalesce into an integrated tapestry of images and sounds".
Commissioned
by the Athens Concert Organization - World Premiere
GREAT
EUROPEAN ORCHESTRAS
Dresden
Philharmonic Orchestra
Since the
end of the nineteenth century, internationally acclaimed musicians have played with and been members of the
Dresden Philharnonic, while a number of composers such as Tchaikovsky, Dvoràk
and Richard Strauss have conducted it in performances of their own works.
Ninteen-forty-seven
marked the dawn of an new era of artistic activity under the direction of H.
Bongartz, who recognised the orchestra and helped it to regain its former
prestige by working with such conductors as Klemperer, Ozawa, Pendercki,
Menuhin and Berio, and with oustanding soloists such as Kemff, Kremer, Founier,
Rostropovich and Maisky, to name but a few.

an especially privileged rapport.
He has
made numerous recordings, both in the operatic and symphonic reperetoire.
